In many children with autism, the body produces autoantibodies (FRAAs) that block special gates called Folate Receptors Alpha (FRα) at the blood-brain barrier. In published research, approximately 70-75% of children with ASD tested positive for these antibodies. Even though folate is present in the blood, it cannot get into the brain where it's needed.
Leucovorin (folinic acid) may use a different pathway, the Reduced Folate Carrier (RFC), to bypass the blocked gates and reach the brain. This is why standard folic acid supplements don't help, but leucovorin might.

How leucovorin works: In many children with autism, autoantibodies block the folate receptor alpha (FRα) pathway, preventing folate from reaching the brain. Leucovorin (folinic acid) bypasses this blockage by using an alternative route called the Reduced Folate Carrier (RFC) pathway. Approximately 75% of children with ASD have FRα autoantibodies.
